Meet Dr. Sophie Austin
Being a pediatric dentist and working with children means the world to me. I chose dentistry as my career when I was 17 years old; even at that young age I understood that the health of the oral cavity was an integral part of one’s total health. Now, after practicing for 34 years, I am just as passionate about children and meeting their dental needs.
I have the amazing opportunity to meet families and treat children from diverse backgrounds. I treat each child who walks into my office as if he or she were my own. I feel that regardless of a child’s cultural background, he or she should feel welcome in our dental office. I believe that all children understand the language of kindness—it is a language spoken fluently by everyone in our office.
Education and Experience
I am a graduate of the City University of New York (Brooklyn College). I then pursued graduate dental training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Subsequently, I completed a general practice residency in Rochester, New York, before moving to Cincinnati in 1990. I worked as a public health dentist and in private practice in the greater Cincinnati area for many years.
After realizing that my true passion was working with children, I completed a pediatric dental residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 2005 and worked in a pediatric dental office in Northern Kentucky. In 2007, I opened the Pediatric Dental Garden Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky, to serve children and families throughout the tristate area.
I am a lifetime student. In order to provide the best possible care for my kids, it is essential for me to remain current with new dental innovations and procedures. In addition to attending webinars and live courses, I am affiliated with several professional organizations including:
- American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
- American Dental Association
- National Dental Association
- Kentucky Dental Association
- Kentucky Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
I also have privileges at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the hospitals of St. Elizabeth Healthcare.
Family and Community
I have been happily married for 33 years, and have been blessed with three wonderful adult children.
My time outside the office is spent with my family, trying different culinary skills, power walking, and reading. I also enjoy writing and expressing my creativity through arts and crafts.
In addition to caring for my patients at the Pediatric Dental Garden, I am an active supporter of the “Give Kids a Smile” program of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. I am involved with my church and go on annual mission trips with other healthcare professionals to underserved communities nationally and internationally. Closer to home, my staff and I also reach out to hundreds of children each year with oral hygiene presentations at preschools and childcare centers.
